Event Description:

The ASEAN, China and MERCOSUR IPR SME Helpdesks offer a globally unparalleled free service for SMEs and intermediaries from the EU. The first-line advice, information and training on the management and protection of intellectual property rights supplied by the Helpdesks to thousands of SMEs has helped these European businesses prepare for IP challenges in world’s strongest growth markets.

The Helpdesks are organising our annual Stakeholder Meeting in Brussels. The event will give you the opportunity to see how our services help businesses internationalise while protecting their business assets. It will also allow you to have your say on the Helpdesks and what can be done to improve the services they offer in terms of the support to businesses and collaboration with partner organisations and experts.

The ASEAN HD has successfully introduced a comprehensive package of services that address the separate IPR systems of 10 countries. As Southeast Asia continues to formally integrate, the ASEAN HD will play a key role in helping those SMEs which are aiming at doing business in multiple ASEAN member states.

Speaker biography:

Simon Cheetham is the Team Leader of the China and ASEAN IPR SME Helpdesk. He is a China and ASEAN IPR Enforcement expert with over 30 years' experience in commercial investigations, due diligence and IPR enforcement in China, Southeast Asia and internationally. He has lived and worked in China and South-East Asia for over 17 years. He is also the Managing Director of ERINYES INTERNATIONAL LTD, a firm he founded to capitalise on his extensive experience of international investigations, loss prevention and enforcement work. He manages and directs the operations of the Company from Europe to the Far East.

Simon began his career with the Hong Kong Police, where he was responsible for the detection and prosecution of a wide variety of crimes, including fraud and homicide. While in South-East Asia Simon was Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce Intellectual Property Committee and acted as an advisor to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force on China. He has lectured frequently around the world on security issues and IPR and has written articles and papers on a variety of related topics, including a chapter in 'Intellectual Property Law and Practice in the People's Republic of China' published by Kluwer Law International B.V. He is fluent in English and Cantonese.

He is an ASEAN IPR Enforcement expert with over 30 years' experience in commercial investigations, due diligence and IPR enforcement in South-East Asia and internationally. He has lived and worked in China and South-East Asia for over 17 years. He is also the Managing Director of ERINYES INTERNATIONAL LTD, a firm he founded to capitalise on his extensive experience of international investigations, loss prevention and enforcement work. He manages and directs the operations of the Company from Europe to the Far East. Simon began his career with the Hong Kong Police, where he was responsible for the detection and prosecution of a wide variety of crimes. While in South-East Asia Simon was Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce IP Committee. He has lectured frequently around the world on security issues and IPR and has served as a short-term expert at ASEAN Seminar in Singapore and a speaker on the topic of Famous Marks and IP protection between borders within ASEAN. The ASEAN IPR SME Helpdesk partnered with the Tirol Chamber of Commerce to organise a training session in German. Helpdesk expert Karl Rackette will highlight the most important, practical steps to take to protect IP while doing business in/with Southeast Asia.

Speaker biography:

Dr Karl Rackette is a patent and trademark attorney and the senior partner of the RACKETTE Partnerschaft Patentanwalte in Freiburg, Germany. He is also a professional representative before the German Patent and Trademark Office, the European Patent Office, WIPO as well as the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs).

Dr Rackette also obtained a Master of Intellectual Property Law and Management from the University of Strasbourg. He undertook training to become a trademark and patent attorney in 1976.

Dr Rackette has been invited to speak on numerous occasions by the EPO, WIPO and other organisations. Since 1992 he has been teaching at the Center for International Industrial Property Studies (CEIPI) in Strasbourg, France and since 1997 he has been a tutor for the South East Asian Patent Drafting Course organized by FICPI in Asia.
